Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected pope of the Roman Catholic Church today after a two-day conclave. He took the name Francis.
Pope Francis, 76, served as the archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998 and was elevated to cardinal in 2001. He is the first pope from the New World in the almost two-thousand-year history of the church.
Francis takes office two weeks after Pope Benedict XVI abdicated office.
