O Campaign Apologizes to America for De Niro Race Joke

A spokeswoman for Michelle Obama has apologized for a joke made by the washed-up actor Robert De Niro at a fundraiser in New York City yesterday, the Hill reports:

"We believe the joke was inappropriate," Olivia Alair, a campaign spokeswoman for the First Lady, said in a statement.

While introducing the First Lady at a New York fundraiser, DeNiro jokingly suggested that America wasn't "ready for a white first lady."

"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now, do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" DeNiro said, to laughter from the crowd.

Newt Gingrich later called on the Obama team to apologize.
