A Southern Illinois University poll reveals nearly 90 percent of Illinoisans believe the state and the city of Chicago are corrupt.
89 percent believe corruption is "somewhat common" in the state, and 85 percent believe corruption is "somewhat common" in Chicago.
Over half of respondents said they believe local corruption in Chicago to be "very common."
Director of the SIU Paul Simon Public Policy Institute David Yepsen called the numbers "sad."
"No wonder many people don’t vote and participation in civic affairs seems limited. It’s unhealthy for a society to have such little confidence in the integrity of government. It makes Illinois an unattractive place to live."
Democrats have had a stranglehold on Illinois in recent years, controlling two thirds of statewide elected offices.
