Obama Leaves Open More Tax Hikes for Wealthy in 2013

President Barack Obama left open Wednesday the possibility of more tax increases for the wealthy in 2013, beyond his proposal to increase tax rates on income over $250,000.

The president was promoting at the White House event a deal in the short-term to extend the Bush tax rates on income below $250,000 -- an effective tax hike for high earners, with those rates returning to Clinton-era levels.

Obama then left open more tax increases for the wealthy in a 2013 comprehensive reform bill.

"(A deal now) would give us more time next year to work together on a comprehensive plan to bring down our deficits, to streamline our tax system, to do it in a balanced way--including asking the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more," Obama said.
