Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known as AOC, is a member of Congress representing New York's 14th district. She is a self-proclaimed socialist and a member of The Squad and the Democratic Socialists of America. Before her election to Congress in 2018, she worked as an intern for Sen. Ted Kennedy and was a bartender and activist.
Ocasio-Cortez has been criticized for her lavish lifestyle, which seems to contradict her socialist ideology. She has been known to wear a "Tax the Rich" dress to the Met Gala and owns a $50,000 Tesla. Her living arrangements have also raised eyebrows, as she once resided in a luxury Washington, D.C. apartment complex with amenities such as pools, racquetball courts, and a rooftop dog park.
AOC's Policies and Controversies
Ocasio-Cortez has co-sponsored legislation such as the Green New Deal, which aims to eliminate combustion-engine vehicles, air travel, and "farting cows". The bill also proposes to provide "economic security" to those "unwilling to work" and address "historic oppression" through reparation payments to "vulnerable communities". Her policies have been met with criticism, even from some members of her own party, such as Nancy Pelosi, who has called the Green New Deal a "green dream".
Recently, Ocasio-Cortez has been involved in several controversies, including a Congress campaign photographer lawsuit and a rambling answer on Taiwan that was widely mocked. Her foreign policy adviser, Matt Duss, has also been criticized for his performance in Munich.
