Elon Musk’s personal wealth fell back under the $1 trillion mark after a broad correction in technology markets hit his two flagship holdings hard.

From trillionaire to sub‑trillion

On 12 June, Musk first crossed the trillion‑dollar line when SpaceX listed on the Nasdaq at an issue price of $135 per share and opened at $150, valuing the rocket and satellite group at $1.77 trillion. Because he owns roughly 42 percent of SpaceX, the flotation instantly pushed his paper assets above $1 trillion.

The surge was short‑lived. By 16 June the Bloomberg Billionaires Index recorded a peak net worth of $1.32 trillion. Less than two weeks later, on Tuesday, the index listed Musk at $957 billion – a drop of more than $360 billion.

Market pressures and the SpaceX slide

Rising concerns over spending on artificial‑intelligence infrastructure, higher capital‑cost expectations and persistently elevated interest rates sparked a sell‑off that hit chip makers such as Nvidia, Intel and AMD, but hit SpaceX hardest. On 22 June the SpaceX share price fell 16 percent in a single session, erasing an estimated $240 billion from Musk’s wealth. The stock now trades around $156, more than 30 percent below its mid‑June high.

Analysts estimate that SpaceX accounts for almost 80 percent of Musk’s net worth, with the remainder coming largely from his stake in Tesla.

Expert view

"Bei einer Aktie wie SpaceX war ein Großteil der Entscheidungen wohl emotional getrieben und beruhte auf der Erwartung gewaltiger Fortschritte in der Raumfahrt", said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. "Doch Investieren sollte man mit klarem Blick und Geduld angehen — auch wenn es um solche Summen geht."

Despite the recent losses, Musk remains the world’s richest person by a comfortable margin. Analysts note that a modest 6 percent rise in the SpaceX share price would restore his trillion‑dollar status, potentially making him the first ever recurring trillionaire. SpaceX continues to be one of the most closely watched companies on global markets.
